Seems most abortion and life news today is, at best, good news and bad news -
I try to present the more positive side here. Most of us are inundated with pro
life newsletters all telling the same story which we've heard too many times. A
woman dies from an abortion. An abortionist turns out to be a dirty doctor. A
sniper kills an abortionist, the pro life movement is blamed and in answer, the
pro life movement says "well, this is not good but then, look at all the babies
saved by this guy's demise!" ok, I'm exaggerating a bit here, TONGUE IN CHEEK
but I'm sure you've seen this sort of attitude.
Below is my take on several news stories in the last week but first we have
this:
EMAIL MONEY BEGS FROM PRO LIFE NEWSLETTERS:
Lately a couple of the internet pro life newsletters have sent email asking for
bucks to finance their email newsletter. I'm not sure what they need bucks for,
stamps for their email newsletters? Paper to write their email on? :) Most of
them are not spending a lot of time writing articles - to cut and paste news
takes a few minutes. Only a few that I know of, do commentated news and
articles. The begs I have received lately threaten if we don't contribute to
their email newsletter, they have have to stop sending it. Anyway, don't worry,
you don't have to contribute to the money begs - pro life news WILL be available
in email, whether THEIR newsletter goes down or not. That's because a bunch of
us have been volunteering for years and will likely keep doing so!
Now for the news. This week has been a breakthrough for pro life advocates
because we've actually had some good news - but it hasn't come with bad news as
well. Here are the stories:
WOMAN WINS SETTLEMENT IN LAWSUIT INVOLVING ABC LINK
The first lawsuit against an abortionist for not warning about the breast cancer
risk was won by settlement. The articles suggest the plaintiff got a comfortable
amount of money out of it even though she didn't have breast cancer. The good
news part of this, is that the abortionist's lawyer apparently felt the
scientific EVIDENCE overwhelming enough that a settlement was appropriate rather
than continuing the fight in court.
That most studies available, show that abortion GREATLY increases the breast
cancer risk is significant enough to be a "dealbreaker" for many women, which
might convince them to carry full term instead of aborting. Dealbreakers in
abortion - this is a very good thing. Another good thing is the precedent set
and also, since the abortionist SETTLED, the case remains on record - the
abortionist is giving up his right to appeal the suit and in the process, if so
facto, admitting the danger.
The bad news is that the sponsoring pro life organization has opened a website
to encourage other similar lawsuits. Lawsuits for a "good cause" are still
working the system in a way we really may not want to see. Having a medical
provider in the family, I am quite familiar with the way medical providers are
abused by the system. They already spend thousands of dollars a year for
malpractice insurance. And whom do you think ENDS UP paying for these
settlements? The consumer, of course.
Some states are considering laws against frivolous lawsuit and this may spoil it
for folks who have a legitimate claim.
This is my opinion and my opinion only. I feel as pro lifers we should keep our
OWN houses clean because ultimately, this is the only way to really tap into
Divine Providence to help us. (God is DEFINITELY pro life!) At times I've seen
folks in the pro-life movement do less than ethical things "for a good cause".
Sin is sin regardless of the reasoning behind it. Let's work for "full informed
consent" legislation rather than abusing the system and medical providers with
lawsuits - ultimately, we will all be the losers on that one.
TERRI SCHINDLER-SCHIAVO
Our media girl, Terri is still alive. The parents won their plea and the feeding
tube has been restored. The malleable Florida system which allowed the counting
of thousands of illegal votes from felons for Gore and did NOT count 10,000
absentee ballads from servicemen (which were mostly Republican) has finally,
served a good purpose. The legislature quickly passed a law called "Terri's law"
which forced the husband to restore Terri's feeding tube. No one wanted to see
Terri die and so, this is good news. But there is bad news as well. The husband
has moved her twice, endangering her very fragile state of health and the second
move was to a place which has been kept a secret from the parents. Terri, denied
food/water for several days, remains in critical condition.
Again if anyone knows the Schindlers, tell them that I really feel that that
signing over the entire settlement to the husband IN EXCHANGE for their
daughter's life would be the only way to really save Terri's life if this is
what they wish to do. Once he had possession of the money, the husband would
have no interest in spending money to hasten Terri's death. Seems such a no
brainer to me.
PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTION BAN
The federal ban against the partial birth abortion, after years of fighting for
it, has passed both the house and the Senate and President Bush has already said
he will sign it. Last I heard, the Senate had tacked some amendments on it which
reaffirmed Roe V Wade decision - were these ever removed from the final bill?
I'll give you the bad news first because this story (unlike the others) may
actually have good news which outweighs the bad news.
The bad news is that this bill if signed into law, will probably NOT stop late
term abortions. Abortionists will either go back to salt poisoning (which is
horrible because the baby can take days to die in excruciating pain which
his/her skin is literally burned off) or else, some clever abortionist will come
up with another kind of dreadful way to kill a baby late term which may or may
not be more painful for the baby than the partial birth abortion.
The goods news is that the fight for this bill ended up being a media event for
several years and brought to the light how horrific abortion really is. Many
people, totally horrified, started making connections to earlier term abortions.
Especially if they see how developed the baby is at 12 weeks (usual age for a
suctin abortion). Educating the people is still one of the best ways to stop or
cut down abortion - evil hates the light.
BRIAN FINKEL
With a face serious and honest - looking, abortionist Brian Finkel who did about
20 percent of the abortions in the Phoenix Arizona area, claims to be innocent
of sexual molestation despite the 100 women who have come forth with complaints,
35 of them who testified at his trial. He has taken the witness stand during the
last couple of days with long detailed descriptions of how sexual foreplay (he
calls it "examination") is an important part of a female exam. Yesterday, he
accused the pro life movement of assaulting him (his reason for carrying a gun
and wearing a bullet proof vest). Actually the only assault of Finkel on record
is that of the revolving door of his clinic (he hurt his thumb one time going
through the door).
What he didn't say was that he talked the same abusive way his patients have
described, to the pro lifers praying the Rosary outside his clinic. I know - I
marched his clinic for the better part of a year. (Like what would we assault
him with, our Rosaries? We think far too much of our Rosaries to use them on
that scumbag).
The good news is we can hope the jury puts this guy away for life but if he
somehow gets off, his medical career is ended anyway. He may feel that sexual
foreplay is a necessary part of a gyno exam but I don't think he'll find many
women to agree with him and somehow all the other gynecologists manage to pull
off excellent exams without indulging in foreplay.
The bad news is, he's got very smart lawyers who may get him off. Let's pray
that the jury sees through his vicious lies.
