No Link between vasectomy and cancer says latest study. Too good to be true?
The latest study on the vasectomy which declares that this surgery DOES NOT increase the risk of prostate cancer was first reported on in the JAMA (Journal of the American medical assn).
MSNBC picked it up happily and made it big news.
The study is a survey study which in fact it reminded me of a similar study which "proved" that taking birth control estrogen or hormone replacement therapy estrogen did NOT cause breast cancer. The numbers on the estrogen study were impressive - over 12000 women. Later we found out that no other factors about the women's lives (exercise habits or diet) were taken in consideration making the results of the study, inconclusive. That was about 3 years before estrogen was put on the FDA list of cancer causing chemicals last year!
There are a lot of folks making money from doing vasectomies including my old favorite (NOT) group, Planned Parenthood. Call me a skeptic but since there have been many well done studies showing a definite STRONG link between vasectomy and cancer in the past decade, I smelled a rat.
I looked up the MSNBC link to find more info about the study. MSNBC stated that:
>>>>It compared more than 900 men with prostate cancer to more than 1,200 healthy subjects and found no difference in the cancer rate among men who had vasectomies. <<<<<
Assuming that they did not 'cook the books' i.e. eliminate men with vasectomies for various reasons and keep in mind this sort of study is easily "cooked", comparing 900 men to 1200 men when over a million have had vasectomies seemed very hit or miss to me.
But what I REALLY wondered was, WHO FUNDED THE STUDY?
When I researched the funding I found that it was PARTIALLY funded by the government. So who ELSE funded it, I wondered.
MSNBC didn't say a word about this nor did they provide a link. Getting more interesting, right?
Digging for the funding, I found that it was partially funded by the World Health Organization (WHO), a group known for advocating birth control to the point of doing some rather questionable things. For example, in the early 1990's they were caught administering birth control shots to women who were told they were receiving vaccinations. The shot they received WAS a vaccination but in addition to the disease prevention part, each shot contained a type of contraceptive which the WHO was testing.
Another funding source was the Family Health International. Their home website is:
Looking on their home page, I found them to be very much INTO birth control. But you know what I was searching for - a link to Planned Parenthood.
Buried deep in their year 2000 corporate report, I found the connection!
>>>FHI is a partner with the New York-based Population Council<<<
http://www.fhi.org/en/gen/corpreport/corprep2000/corprep2.html
The Population Council not only has a DIRECT LINK to Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry. It ALSO has been the spearhead group in fighting for the approval of the French abortion pill, RU486 (a type of abortion which is so risky and painful that even the FDA has hesitated in approving it).
Another article in the same journal which first published the "don't worry about cancer with a vasectomy" study also published an article which has not been well publicized. Most publicized studies, stated the author of the JAMA article, are misleading and fail to mention the weaknesses of the study. (JAMA, June 4, 2002)
